Emergency rescue shoring operations

FEMA US&R RESCUE SHORING LECTURE
4 HOUR COURSE
This is a series of two lectures, one on the engineering concepts of emergency building shores, and the other on the proper size-up, placement, step by step fabrication, and procedures necessary for the safe and effective completion of a shoring operation in a structural collapse environment.

EMERGENCY RESCUE SHORING CONCEPTS
8 HOUR COURSE
This class will cover the many concepts and principles of the proper erection of emergency building shoring. The proper size-up, placement, and choices of what shores to utilize will be described. The proper engineering concepts will be explained and the fabrication procedures for each shore will be examined. Several case studies will be looked into as well as proper placement, size-up, and mitigation of a specific shoring operation will be conducted.
Note: This course surpasses the FEMA US&R shoring lecture.

A test will be given at the end of the class.

ENGINEERING CONCEPTS FOR RESCUE SHORING
4 HOUR COURSE
This class is designed to instruct the students in the basic and advanced engineering concepts that are an extremely important part of the design of the shoring systems. The students must understand the proper concepts behind the different angles, the specific nail patterns that are necessary, and how the shores must be loaded properly in order to work effectively. Until you know exactly why and how the shoring systems are constructed properly, then your will be able to deviate slightly form the usual fabrication procedures. Knowing the proper concepts and procedures allows your team the ability to adjust the shoring systems to any possible situation, with the necessary positive results. This 4 hour engineering concept course is a must for operations and technician level responders.

EMERGENCY RESCUE SHORING
24 HOUR COURSE
This is a 3 day course designed to teach the basics of shoring concepts and basic interior and exterior shoring operations. Emphasis is placed on the proper fabrication of the most common shores in the more simple conditions. This course covers the necessary beginning lessons for a first responder rescue crew to be able to safely operate in a partial structural collapse situation in wood frame, URM and light commercial buildings.

INTERIOR SHORING HANDS-ON TRAINING
8 HOURS
This is a one day class designed to thoroughly familiarize the student with the proper interior shoring techniques needed to safely construct all the types of interior shores generally needed to conduct safe rescue operations. The basic shores designed for interior structure use will be discussed and erected. This is an intensive hands-on course and the students will be tested on the proper erection of the various shores. Shores covered will be the T shore, Double T shore.

EXTERIOR SHORING HANDS-ON TRAINING
8 HOURS
This is a one day class designed to thoroughly familiarize the student with the proper exterior shoring techniques needed to safely construct the basic exterior shores generally needed to conduct safe rescue operations and stabilize the exterior of the structure. This is an intensive hands-on course and the students will be tested on the proper erection of the various shores needed to accomplish this task.

ADVANCED EMERGENCY RESCUE SHORING OPERATIONS "NEW"
40 HOURS
This is a very intensive course; it is designed to bring the student to the top of "their game" in the discipline of rescue shoring. This is the most advanced level of shoring training available anywhere! It includes a thorough lecture on the many options that are available to the rescuer and which one is the proper choice for any given situation. The student will be taught how to properly erect the various shores in heavily damaged areas and structures that are severely racked or leaning. We will cover many of the different options available to the rescuer. Larger shores with 6x6, 4x6 and fabricated posts will be erected, as well as multi story shores, 16 ft high laced posts, openings greater that 8ft wide, heavily sloped walls and floors, double & triple rakers, multi post slope floor shores, to name a few. The last day of the course will be a full rescue shoring scenario run by the students. Everything taught in the course will be included in the exercise. There will be a test of the students' knowledge at the conclusion of the course as well.

This course has been developed by John O'Connell, author of the Shoring section 2b of the FEMA SCT manual, as well as the FDNY's shoring curriculum and the NY State Office of Fire Prevention & Control's shoring courses. Contact us for more information.
